Are you planning on running while on holiday? Find out what to pack for city breaks, beach holidays and trips to colder destinations.

Finding time for a run while you’re on holiday will keep your fitness up and let you explore the local scenery at the same time.

If you’re building up to a big race, it might be essential to keep to your running plan too. You don’t want to come back home feeling sluggish and unfit.

What running kit should you take with you though? The first thing in your suitcase should be your running shoes – without them, you’re unable to do anything.

Then you should check what the weather is going to be like. Don’t just look at the overall climate, check out the latest weather forecasts . That’s your first step in working out what holiday running gear to bring with you.

Beach holidays
If you’re going somewhere hot, you’ll want to take your run in the morning before temperatures soar too high. But even so, it can get pretty warm early on. So here are a few things to throw in your suitcase:

  • Running shorts
  • Breathable short sleeve running top
  • Ankle socks
  • Electrolyte tablets for hydration
  • Backpack with built-in water supply
  • Water bottle belt
  • Cap
  • Sweatbands
  • Sun cream

City breaks
If you’re off on a city break, though, you may still want to get some road running in. One of the benefits of a city break is you can pick up lots of essentials while you’re there – sun cream and energy bars for instance.

But there are a few things you’ll need to take with you alongside the clothes that match the temperatures:

  • Reflective vest (so you stay safe around traffic)
  • Backpack
  • GPS device

Colder destinations
You’ll need to pack a little bit more if you’re going somewhere colder – maybe on a ski break. But you can pack smartly and still keep your luggage weight down:

  • Packable, waterproof jackets
  • Arm warmers
  • Base layers
  • Gloves
  • Running tights
